The Regional Museum of Atacama has officially opened its doors in Copiapó, marking a major milestone for cultural infrastructure and tourism in northern Chile. The new museum stands as one of the country’s most significant public investments in culture and is set to become a key attraction for travelers interested in heritage, history, and the natural sciences.

Located on Alameda Manuel Antonio Matta, in Copiapó’s historic district, the museum is designed to function not only as an exhibition space but also as a cultural and urban hub, connecting with nearby heritage sites and strengthening the city’s role as a gateway to the Atacama region.

A Landmark Public Investment in Culture

The project represents an investment of nearly CLP 19 billion, funded primarily by the Atacama Regional Government through the Fondo Nacional para el Desarrollo Regional (FNDR), with additional support from the Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio and execution by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas.

With a total surface of 6,445 square meters distributed across five levels, the building—designed by Max Núñez Arquitectos—includes permanent and temporary exhibition halls, conservation-standard storage areas, specialized laboratories, a heritage library, workshop and auditorium spaces, and visitor services.

An Immersive Exploration of Atacama

One of the museum’s main highlights is its new permanent exhibition, developed by the National Heritage Service after a long research process that began in 2018. The exhibition is organized into seven thematic galleries, covering Atacama’s geography, geology, paleontology, archaeology, history, biodiversity, and astronomy.

In total, more than 2,000 objects are now on display, including fossils, archaeological and historical artifacts, minerals, biological replicas, and immersive audiovisual resources—significantly expanding the region’s public access to its cultural and natural heritage.

A New Cultural Highlight in Northern Chile

Beyond its institutional importance, the Regional Museum of Atacama is expected to play a growing role in cultural tourism, encouraging visitors to spend more time in Copiapó and explore the region beyond its iconic desert landscapes.

By offering context and narrative to the territory, the museum provides travelers with a deeper understanding of Atacama’s long history and its connection to both Earth and sky—adding cultural depth to journeys through one of the world’s most extraordinary environments.
